How can a change in perspective help a company to improve its standing within the financial community? This was one of the main questions at the IR Round Table that Springtime arranged together with BNY Mellon on October 11. Guest speaker Darren Shirlaw gave an inspiring presentation on the topic “Valuation = Profit x Multiple”. Darren Shirlaw has previously worked as a fund manager but now helps boards, CEOs and IR managers to better manage their share price.
And the crash course on bridging the gap between companies and investors?
Managers and CEOs are taught to focus on the bottom line. Analysts, on the other hand, look at the assets. Frankly, it is like speaking German to someone who would only answer in Dutch. Now, how can we get investors and general managers not only to speak the same language but to understand each other?
The basics are simple. Shirlaw’s “tools of trade” boil down to the fact that the value of a company and its shares equals profit times multiple – or growth. But where do most companies focus their resources and communications and efforts? Exactly! On the famous bottom line! However, what analysts look for are the assets that will generate future growth, e.g. the multiple. Therefore, Darren Shirlaw recommends companies and IR managers is to focus more resources and communication efforts on talent capability, product innovation, product extensions, market and channel extensions, brand extensions and scalability – all factors that drive growth and that attracts the positive attention of investors and shareholders.
